We designed and created a traditional VT timber frame for the ell of an historic Sudbury home that had been lost to fire. From a few photographs and talking with the clients, we were able to re-create the ell frame much as it had been. The frame features many elements common to vernacular frames from the early 19th century, including log joists and rafters, a pentagonal ridge beam, and a timber--framed hayloft ladder. We hand-hewed this frame with broad-axes.
